CLYPSO Weathers the Storm of 2020 with New Single Off the Back of Collaborations with The Avalanches and Kwame
23 Oct 2020
“I hope this song brings some light and groove back into the hearts of everyone who’s doing it tough but more importantly I hope everyone has at least one badass storm-weather friend in their life.” - CLYPSO
Off the back of collaborating with a string of high calibre home-grown and international talent, from The Avalanches, Jamie xx and Neneh Cherry to Kwame, Sydney producer, vocalist and songwriter CLYPSO unveils her vivacious new single ‘Storm’. Joining forces with Billboard-recognised producer Konstantin Kersting (Tones & I, Mallrat, The Jungle Giants, The Belligerents, and more) on production, ‘Storm’ is an ode to those friends who see us through the bad times – something more relevant than ever in 2020.
As an antonym to a fair-weather friendship, ‘Storm’ encapsulates the essence of truly being there for someone. In the words of CLYPSO, “Bye-bye fair-weather friends, the ones who are only there when times are good and you’re riding high. This year is the year of the storm-weather friend. They know you best. They know your worst. They feel like home. And when the storm truly hits, they’ll be the only ones standing right there with you.” Setting an intention for the track to feel like “a sun-drenched monsoon”, CLYPSO elaborates on the creative process behind ‘Storm’, “The marimbas peeking out through the corners while the crunchy bass line does its thing. The bridge is intentionally simpler and child-like; a dreamy micro world within the world of Storm. Also any excuse to squeeze in some recorder.”
Aligning with renowned creative director Imogen Grist to create the official video clip for ‘Storm’ sees CLYPSO appear in a series of enchanting miniature worlds. "It was an absolute pleasure working with Clypso, who let us run wild on the concept and brought so much energy to the shoot. This has probably been the most ambitious film clip I’ve ever taken on. Having worked very little with miniatures and VFX, I was definitely thrown in the deep end, but I’ve learned so much throughout the process, and cinematographer/creative wizard Jack Saltmiras held my hand the whole way through. I also loved the collaborative nature of the project as it brought together groups of friends to partake in wholesome crafternoons, painting tiny figurines and hanging fluffy clouds from the ceiling - a nice escape from the current state of the world. I hope this project can bring audiences a moment of joy and positivity in these wild and confusing times."
CLYPSO continues her trajectory as a rising and talented artist in the Australian electronic scene. Since exploding onto the scene in 2017 with her breakthrough single ‘YOLO’, CLYPSO has been turning heads as a songwriter, vocalist and producer, having written with the likes of electronic royalty The Avalanches, Kwame, and Konstantin Kersting, as well as gaining a FBi SMAC Award nomination for ‘Breakthrough Artist’, a triple j Unearthed Artist of the Week crown and hitting #1 on the triple j Unearthed Electronic and Hip-Hop chart.
CLYPSO’s energetic and unique live show has also landed her national supports for the likes of PNAU, Channel Tres, and Art vs Science, as well as huge festival plays such as Meredith, Festival of the Sun, Lost Paradise and more.
